The Select Nelson Tray Table is a limited-edition piece inspired by George Nelson's 1955 Flock of Butterflies clock and the molded top of his 1955 tray table, which went into production in 1961. The Select Table's inlays of walnut and santos palisander against a backdrop of white ash evoke butterflies in flight. A brushed stainless steel column and black umber steel legs support the top.
During his tenure as Herman Miller's design director, George Nelson declared that the times called for objects "designed to meet fully the requirements of modern living." His 1961 round Tray Table, as streamlined as his Jaguar XK-120 sports car, was one such design, created to fit with ease into the modern home.
Every year, Herman Miller releases a new Select edition product—a reinterpreted classic, like the Tray Table, a once-decommissioned piece from their archives, or something entirely new. The annual release is a limited edition selected for its originality and collector appeal.
The original George Nelson tray table was available in walnut or teak veneer. Herman Miller has done this version in white ash, finished with a process that arrests the wood in its natural, freshly cut state. The resulting color is a creamy white that resists yellowing over time.
The inlay juxtaposes walnut and santos palisander veneers in each diamond shape. Five-ply veneer construction, with inner plies of bay poplar, ensures the top remains stable through changes in humidity and years of use.
As with the original, the 2011 Select edition is presented in a special take-home container about the size of a pizza box.
You can order the Select edition Nelson Tray Table or Tray until February 6, 2012, or until supplies run out.
